The second meeting

On February 23rd Phoenix Speakers held its second meeting.

Toastmaster, Andrew Smith, used the theme of “unusual skills” to introduce all of the speakers. Grammarian, Alex Hood, introduced two discreet words of the day: discrete and discreet. And timekeeper Simon Simpson kept everyone to time.

Deborah Henley ran a lively Table Topics session based off newspaper clippings from that day’s Metro. Gilly Cutts told us about the world she would like to hold in her hands. Gary Cooke told us about inappropriate behaviour in the kitchen. Jo Holmes described her former hair styles. Ian Millen described the Blackpool beach diet. Steve Hayward told us about how he likes to play girls in Table Tennis. Richard McMurray talked about being an iPhone afficianado.  Tom Elliot talked about the meal of his dreams. Matt Pollard talked about the holiday of a lifetime. Nigel Cutts talked about having a good cause. Paul Walsh demonstrated his cure for back pain.

James Marshall evaluated all the Table Topics speakers.

We were treated to two fantastic icebreaker speeches from new members Kate Proffitt and Ian Baxtor. Kate descried a recent trip to Milan and Ian told us about his plans to climb mountains in memory of his grandfather. VP Education, Brad Currin, delivered a speech about the ten commandments of hockey. And President, Kristie West delivered her 9th speech encouraging us to think more carefully about how we donate to charity.

The speeches were evaluated by Nigel Cutts, Gilly Cutts, Laura McCracken and Gary Cooke. The General Evaluator was Jo Holmes.

Winners

Best Table Topic: Ian Millen
Best Evaluator: A three way tie (!) between James Marshall, Nigel Cutts, Gary Cooke
Best Speech: Kristie West

Join us for our next meeting on 9th March at 7pm.
