Meeting Notes – 25th November 2015

Isabel, our president, opened the meeting explaining how toastmasters has helped her in her professional life.

Beulah was the toastmaster for the evening.

Elaine was the timekeeper of the evening.

Shane was the grammarian for the night and the word of the day was “Kafkaesque”, something with a senseless, surrealist and often menacing complexity.

The table topics session was run by Bettina, the table topics master for the evening.  She gave book titles to the table topics speakers, in respect of which they had to pretend they had written the book and had to promote the book.  Congratulations to all speakers on a challenging subject, we even had a guest participating.

Ana was the table topics evaluator of the night.

Tanya, the Sergeant at arms that evening, welcomed the 8 guests that visited Phoenix that night, in the usual Phoenix welcoming fashion.

After the break, Isabel opened the second half of the meeting with some announcements.  She spoke of the evaluation workshop that Phoenix will organize in February 2016.  She also congratulated the three members, Trang, Azar and Ian, who had participated in a brilliant stand up comedy show.

We had a fantastic prepared speeches session:

  • The first speaker was Ian, with a #2 speech (organize your speech) with the title “eating smart”, a mouth-watering account of the qualities and skills of the octopus.
  • The second speaker was Georgie, also with a #2 speech with a very personal note on the subject of commitment.
  • The third speaker was a guest speaker, Mark from Olympians toastmasters, with a very inspiring speech entitled “love conquers all”.
  • And the final speaker of the night was a very inspiring #10 speech (inspire the audience) by Roland.  Congratulations Roland on the achievement of the Competence Communicator award!

The evaluators that evening were: Kate evaluating Ian, Tanya evaluating Georgie, Azar evaluating Mark and Simon evaluating Roland.

A big thanks to general evaluator that evening, Marco from London Corinthians, who gave a detailed evaluation of everyone and everything not previously evaluated.

Big congratulations to the winners of the night who were:

  • Atul, as best table topic speaker
  • Georgie, for best prepared speech
  • Simon as best evaluator

Isabel closed the meeting encouraging members to make an effort and dress festive on the Christmas party on 9 December.
