Meeting Notes – 13th January 2016

President Isabel started the meeting wishing everyone a happy New Year and reminding the audience of the Toastmasters promises.  She also recommended everyone to read the Toastmasters magazine and encouraged everyone to get more involved in the Club.

The toastmaster of the night was Ian, who started the meeting with the subject of mentoring. Before handing over to the timekeeper, Ian announced the subject for the Phoenix Challenge for Ana, who had volunteered to cover a prepared speech cancellation.  The subject was: “New Year resolutions: the best laid plans can always go wrong”.

The Timekeeper of the night was Tanya who kept us all under the time rules.

The Grammarian of the night was Kate, who gave the word of the day Bellwether, someone or something that shows how a situation will develop or change.  All the speakers were encouraged to use the word in the meeting.

The Topics master of the evening was Bjorn, with various topics related to New Year resolutions.

Azar was the Table Topics evaluator for the night and evaluated all the table topics speakers.  He also doubled up as Sergeant at arms to warmly welcome the 12 guests we had that evening.

After the break, Isabel announced that the International Speech and evaluation competition would take place at the first meeting in March.  She also spoke of the website revamp and the mentoring program that is scheduled to start in January.

Next came the prepared speeches section.

The first Speaker was Ana with the Phoenix challenge entitled “New Year resolutions: the best laid plans can always go wrong”.

The second Speaker was Caroline with speech # 5 (your body speaks) entitled “How to make a short film in 5 steps”

The third and Speaker was Simon with an advanced speech on modern slavery in the Middle East.

The speech evaluators were as follows: Mike evaluated Ana, Grant evaluated Caroline and Elaine evaluated Simon.

The general evaluator of the evening was Mark, who evaluated everyone and everything that had not previously been evaluated.

Congratulations to the winners of the night who were:

  • Georgie for best table topic
  • Grant for best evaluator
  • Simon for best prepared speech

The meeting ended with some members going to the bar.

Next meeting is on 27 January, I hope to see you as many of you as possible.
