How it works

Phoenix Speakers is affiliated to (Toastmasters International) and we use Toastmasters’ tried and tested education programme to develop our speaking skills.

This programme helps members become more effective in several areas, including:

  • Formal presentations
  • Informal communication – speaking one-to-one or in a small group
  • Thinking on your feet
  • Managing and participating in meetings
  • Leading and managing people

At the meetings there is no formal instructor who teaches you how to speak in public. Instead we learn by doing and each meeting is made up of impromptu and prepared speeches given by our members. We also learn from each other by giving evaluations so we can learn what we did well and how we can improve.

In addition to giving speeches, at the meetings members also take on a number of different roles. The roles enable members to develop confidence when speaking in front of an audience, try different speaking styles and develop their leadership skills. They also ensure the meetings run smoothly.

On joining, members receive two documents which they work through at their own pace.

  • The Competent Communicator manual consists of 10 short speeches projects where you learn how to organise your speech, use movement and vocal variety, to speak with authority and sincerity and how to motivate and inspire your audience. When you finish all of the projects, you are eligible for Competent Communicator award.
  • The Competent Leadership manual consists of 10 projects which develop your ability to listen, to provide feedback, to facilitate, to motivate and mentor. When you complete the manual, you are eligible for Competent Leader (CL) award.

Once these manuals have been completed, there more than fifteen advanced manuals to continue developing your communication and leadership skills.
